How emotion influences viral content

An interesting study appeared last month in the Journal of Marketing Research. The authors studied every New York Times article published over a three-month period. Their goal was to track which types of content achieved more diffusion in social channels.

According to the study, virality is partially driven by physiological arousal. Content that evokes high-arousal positive (e.g. , awe) or negative (e.g., anger or anxiety) emotions is more viral. Content that evokes low-arousal or deactivating emotions (e.g., sadness) is less viral. You can read the abstract or purchase the article here.

New Report: Inactivity is a much greater health threat than obesity

The Lancet released a series of studies about physical activity and our health. As HuffPost Healthy Living reported, approximately one in 10 deaths is associated with a lack of physical activity -- that’s almost as many deaths as can be attributed to smoking. Public health researchers are now considering sedentary lifestyle to be a global health crisis. Read the article here.
